Weather Alert in Minnesota
Air Quality Alert issued May 13 at 2:27PM CDT by NWS Duluth MN
AREAS AFFECTED: North St. Louis; Northern Cook/Northern Lake; Central St. Louis
DESCRIPTION: * WHAT...The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency has extended the Air Quality Alert for fine particles pollution. The Air Quality Index (AQI) is expected to reach the Orange or Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups category. * WHERE...Northeast Minnesota. The areas most likely to experience smoke impacts include Brimson, Isabella, Babbitt, Ely, and portions of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. * WHEN...Until 4 PM CDT Wednesday. * IMPACTS...Sensitive groups, such as people with lung disease (including asthma), heart disease, and children and older adults, may experience health effects. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...A pair of large wildfires - the Camp House fire and Jenkins Creek fire - remain uncontained in northeastern Minnesota. The fires are located near Birmson, or approximately 25 miles north-northwest of Two Harbors. High temperatures and low dewpoints will continue to create an environment favorable for the growth of these wildfires as well as any other fires that may form. Southerly winds will gradually turn southeasterly and will transport smoke northward into northern St Louis and Lake counties.
INSTRUCTION: Sensitive groups, such as people with lung disease (including asthma), heart disease, and children and older adults, should limit prolonged or heavy exertion. Reduce or eliminate activities that contribute to air pollution, such as outdoor burning, and use of residential wood burning devices. Reduce vehicle trips and vehicle idling as much as possible. Follow all safety instructions and evacuation orders from local emergency management officials. Keep windows closed overnight to prevent smoke from getting indoors.

Next Topic: Freezing Rain
A fractus cloud (scud) is a fragmented, tattered cloud which has
likely been sheared off of another cloud. They are accessory clouds, meaning they
develop from parent clouds, and are named in a way which describes the original
cloud which contained them.
Fractus clouds which have originated from cumulus clouds are referred to as
cumulus fractus, while fractus clouds which have originated from stratus clouds
are referred to as stratus fractus. Under certain conditions a fractus cloud might
merge with another cloud, or develop into a cumulus cloud, but usually a
fractus cloud seen by itself will dissipate rapidly.
They are often observed on the leading and trailing edges of storm clouds,
and are a display of wind activity.

Weather Topic: What is Graupel?
Home - Education - Precipitation - Graupel
Next Topic: Hail
Graupel is a form of precipitation that is created by atmospheric conditions
which cause supercooled water droplets to contact snow crystals and freeze to
their surface.
Sometimes known as soft hail or snow pellets, graupel is delicate and easily
destroyed by touch. Whereas hail usually falls during severe weather, graupel
doesn't require such conditions to form, and can form in mild precipitation
similar to situations which produce snowfall.
